Swim counselors will work at camp as part of the waterfront team, this also includes lifeguards, boat driving staff and other water sports instructors such as kayak and canoeing instructors.
Waterfront counselors may have dual roles at camp and may work as swimming instructor and a lifeguard. This is all dependant on your experience, qualifications and the specific staffing needs of each camp.
Camp swimming instructors will work with the camp directors to develop a swim curriculum which provides activities to help campers develop all of their swimming skills.
As the summer camp swim counselor you will be responsible to evaluating all participants and ensuring they are taking part in swim activities which are appropriate for their swimming level.
To work as a summer camp swimming instructor you should posses a recognized teaching certificate which demonstrates you fully understand how to create and implement training plans to help individuals with their swimming skills, many camps will also want to see that you have experience working with children in this environment before considering hiring you for a position.
This type of role certainly comes with a fair amount of responsibility and individuals who qualify can expect to earn higher salaries than other staff who are working in roles with less responsibilities and requiring less in the way of formal qualifications.
You will be expected to hold a recognized swim instructor qualification if you are hoping to work as a swim counselor at a camp. Most camp directors will also usually want to hire individuals with experience but there are so many camps in America that you can normally find an opportunity at a camp if you have the relevant qualifications but limited experience.
What They Say
"I really enjoy working with kids and love everything to do with swimming. My experience working as a swimming instructor at camp was amazing. It was long hours and sometimes the campers would test your patients but the overall experience was fantastic and I made friends with so many other awesome individuals from countries all over the world. After camp we were also able to spend just under a month travel around America and we got to see so much. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who is interested"
