Jobs on Cruise Ships

Cruise ship jobsAlthough working on a cruise ship may not technically be a seasonal job, it certainly is a fantastic way to travel and visit some fantastic locations around the world whilst working!

The great thing about cruse ship jobs are that there is such a wide variety of vacancies an options from entry level positions all the way through to high end positions which require a great deal of training. Most of the cruise ships today are such giant boats, they are almost like floating cities and require staff to fill vacancies in all kinds of areas.

Positions on a cruise ship can be categorized in two distinct areas. there are the operations staff, these are the members of staff such as the captain, navigation's staff, ship maintenance etc that are responsible for the cruse ship itself and getting from one destination to another. Then there are the guest services staff which look after all of the guests traveling on the ship, this can include management positions, house keeping, chefs, waiters and waitresses, entertainers, lifeguards, fitness staff, health and beauty staff plus many other positions.

Before applying for any one of the positions it is advisable to try and do some research into exactly what it is like working on a cruise ship and what each position can entail. Many people apply for positions expecting it to be a vacation for them but then find out it is actually very hard work with little time to enjoy themselves.

Most staff on cruise ships will work seven days a week but will have extended breaks each day, accommodation for staff working in cruise ship jobs can range from private cabins to cabins with up to four people sharing, obviously the more senior the position the better the accommodation.

When working on a cruise ship you will most likely be offered a contract of around 6 - 9 months with some contracts running for up to a year.

Cruise ship jobs for couples

In recent years many cruise ship companies have changed their policies on employment opportunities and have made concessions for couples applying to work on cruise ships. Before this time it was not unusual for couples to have to share separate living spaces and even be on different work schedules. This obviously was not good for any couples that had longed to work together on the high seas and certainly wasn't a very romantic way to travel and see the world.

Today many cruise companies have become much more accepting towards couples and often will allow couples to share private cabins and try to help with scheduling of shifts so that they can spend time together when not on duty.

Be warned though that most cruise lines will reserve the right to transfer any person on the ship to whatever department of cruse ship they feel they need staff on. So you may apply as a couple but then one of you is transferred, which is surely not a good option for most couples!

When applying be sure to ask questions about accommodation, contract length and the guarantee of working on the same cruise ship as a couple for the length of your contract.

If you are a couple applying for positions on a cruise ship then some companies will make special allowances and grant you a shared cabin. Although this may seem like a really great idea and a romantic way that you can work together often you will be on different shifts and may not get to spend a great deal of time together.

What they say...

"I have worked for several years on cruise ships and had some great jobs. The whole experience of working on a cruise ship is fantastic and you get to see so much of the world, it is however hard work and can be tough at times being away from your family."

"If you like to travel and see new places, enjoy meeting new people and aren't scared of a little hard work then you should love the experience of working on a cruise ship. I spent 12 months working as a crew member sailing around the Caribbean and it was amazing!"
