Maybe you enjoy camping so much that you are considering becoming a summer camp counselor?
Working as a camp counselor provides so many different opportunities. It is a great way to meet new people, gain experience in the outdoors and spend time working with kids.
The great thing about working as a camp counselor is you can choose to sign up for a part time job or work the entirety of the summer. Any special qualifications that you possess, such as lifeguard qualifications, first aid, or CPR certification can help you land a camp counselor job.
Other skills known to be useful include: horseback experience, guitar playing, work as a naturalist, most anything outdoors, and jobs requiring a focus in leadership. Take this opportunity to get paid and gain experience while doing something you will love in your own town!
While some camps do have age limits to be a camp counselor do not be dismayed, consider spending the summer as a counselor-in-training (CIT), which will give you valuable experience you will need to one day become a camp counselor. If you are someone with a lot of energy consider a kids summer camp, these will often times include various games and activities. Camp counselors are often creative and innovative in building and developing new games and activities for the children of all ages, this could be your opportunity to showcase your skills.
Here are some ideas and tips on how to become a camp counselor.
1 - Gain Experience, where ever you live in the world you are going to have opportunities to gain experience working with kids. Now it may not be paid but it is experience and that is important. Schools, youth groups, sports teams and other child focused groups are always thankful for individuals that are willing to volunteer some time and help with activities and events that they have going on. By volunteering with a local youth group you will not only gain valuable experience on how to work with children but if you do a good job you will hopefully get a glowing reference from the organization director which will help with any camp counselor application.
2 - Get Qualified, for a lot of camp jobs you don't need any specific qualification but if you can get some basic qualifications this certainly helps. First Aid certificates, CPR training, lifeguard qualifications, sports coaching qualifications are all things that will help you gain a positions working at a summer camp.
3 - Research, contact camps and find out exactly what they are looking for from their camp counselors. Do you have the required skills? Is the positions a good fit for you? By researching the position you can then go away and work on whatever it is you need to be suitable for the position.
4 - Legalities, are you considering working at a summer camp overseas? If so then you will need to look into sponsoring organizations that help you apply for the required visas and documentation to work in particular countries. When you become a summer camp counselor, you are responsible for ensuring kids are safe, having fun and engaged in interesting recreational and educational activities. Being a camp counselor is a wonderful opportunity for college students looking to fill their summer. If you are someone who considers yourself good with kids, this might be the perfect fit for you!
